Frameless & European Kitchen Cabinets

What frameless means

An American face frame cabinet has a solid wood frame on the front of the box that the doors hinge to. A frameless cabinet does not; the doors hinge directly to the box sides and cover the box edges completely. The result is wider openings for the same cabinet width, no center stile between double doors, drawers that are about 1 1/2" wider inside, and a face of doors with a uniform 1/8" reveal between them. That seamless face is the European look.

Why choose it

Storage and access. Every inch of the box opening is usable, roll-outs and drawers are wider, and there is no frame lip to lift things over. The look is modern by default, but Tuscany's shaker door shows it can carry a transitional kitchen too. The trade is installation: frameless boxes need a flatter wall and more careful shimming to keep the reveals even, and the doors have less adjustment range than face frame hinges.

Melamine finishes

These lines use a thermally fused laminate over an engineered board core. The color or wood grain runs across the full face, it does not need touch-up paint, and it cleans with a damp cloth. Finishes include matte and gloss whites (Bianco, Blanco), charcoal and black (Antracita, Carbone), sage (Verde Salvia), navy (Azul Marino), and a range of textured wood grains (Woodline, Rosales, Nocce, Como Ash) that read as oak, walnut and ash without the price. Melamine is harder to scratch than paint but a deep chip cannot be refinished, so it suits a kitchen that gets used rather than babied.

Door styles

Catalina and Ovela Catalina are slab doors; see modern and slab cabinets for the face frame slabs to compare. Tuscany and Ovela Tuscany are transitional shaker doors on the same frameless box, and are included in the shaker collection. By color, these lines appear under white, gray, black, green and blue.

Hardware for frameless
