Pulls come as bar, cup, wire, ring and bail pulls, plus edge pulls that mount on the top edge of a drawer front for a minimal look. Appliance pulls are longer, mostly 12", 18" or 24" center-to-center, for panel-ready refrigerators and tall pantry doors. Knobs come in round, square, T-knob, mushroom, crystal and wood styles. Backplates sit behind a knob or pull to cover old holes or add detail.

Getting the size right

Measure center-to-center: the distance between the middle of the two screw holes, not the overall length. If you are replacing pulls, match the old hole spacing so you don't have to drill or fill holes. The most common pull sizes are 3", 3-3/4" (96 mm) and 5-1/16" (128 mm).

Questions

What is the 1/3 rule for cabinet pulls?

It's a rule of thumb that a drawer pull should be about one third of the drawer's width. On a 30" drawer that points to a pull of around 10", such as a 10-1/16" (256 mm) bar pull.

Should I use knobs or pulls?

Either works, and many kitchens use both: knobs on doors and pulls on drawers. Pulls are easier to grab on wide or heavy drawers, and one long pull can replace two knobs on a drawer wider than about 24".

What finishes are most popular for cabinet hardware?
