Choosing a grit

Lower numbers are coarser. Start around 80–120 grit to shape or remove marks, move to 150–180 for smoothing, and finish at 220 before stain or topcoat. Paper weight (A, C, X) tells you how stiff the backing is.

Next step: stains, topcoats and wood filler. Shop CGW and Sungold.

Questions

What grit sandpaper should I use on wood?

Work up in steps: 80–120 to shape, 150–180 to smooth, 220 before finishing.

Hook-and-loop or PSA discs?

Hook-and-loop discs swap quickly and can be reused; PSA discs stick flat and are common on shop sanders.

What do A, C and X weight mean?

They describe the backing: A is light and flexible paper, C is heavier, and X is a cloth backing for belts.
