Cabinet Hinges

Cabinet hinges hold kitchen, bath and furniture doors in place and control how they open and close. This collection brings together the hinge styles used on cabinet doors: concealed European hinges, soft-close and self-closing hinges, and visible surface-mount, semi-concealed and partial-wrap hinges, from brands like Blum, Hickory Hardware, Amerock, Youngdale and Pride Industrial.

Concealed cabinet hinges

Concealed hinges, also called European or hidden hinges, mount inside the cabinet so no hinge shows when the door is closed. The hinge cup sets into a round hole bored in the back of the door, usually 35mm, with 40mm cups on some thick-door hinges. Filling old cup holes? Our 35mm hinge hole repair kits come in maple, oak, alder, cherry and hickory.

  • Face-frame cabinets: the Blum Compact 38N face frame hinge covers overlays from 5/16" to 3/4", and the Blum Compact 39C covers 1" to 1-9/16". Both come screw-on or press-in, soft-closing or self-closing.
  • Full overlay, half overlay and inset doors: Blum Clip Top Blumotion 110° hinges clip onto a separate mounting plate and come in straight-arm (full overlay), half-cranked (half overlay) and full-cranked (inset) versions.
  • Traditional face-frame kitchens: the Youngdale concealed hinge comes in nickel, antique brass, oil rubbed bronze and white.

Soft-close, self-closing or free-swinging

Soft-close cabinet hinges have a built-in damper that slows the door in its last few degrees so it closes quietly. Self-closing hinges use a spring to pull the door shut and keep it closed. Free-swinging hinges have no spring and stay where you leave them.

Surface-mount, semi-concealed and wrap hinges

On traditional cabinets the hinge is part of the look. Hickory Hardware surface-mount hinges come in self-closing and free-swinging versions, alongside semi-concealed, self-mortise and double demountable hinges. We also carry 3/8" inset semi-concealed self-closing hinges and partial-wrap hinges for 1/4" overlay doors, in finishes such as antique brass, polished brass, satin nickel and vintage bronze.

Wide-angle and specialty cabinet hinges

The Blum Clip Top 155° zero protrusion hinge is made for cabinets with inner drawers or pull-out shelves. The Blum Clip Top 170° hinge opens the door wide for full access. For sink-front tip-out trays, the Rev-A-Shelf soft-close tip-out hinge includes a left and right hinge with screws. More unusual hinges are in specialty hinges.

How to choose replacement cabinet hinges

  • Cabinet type: face frame or frameless.
  • Door position: full overlay, half overlay or inset.
  • Overlay: how far the closed door covers the cabinet opening on the hinge side.
  • Opening angle: 105° to 110° suits most doors; 155° and 170° hinges let doors open wider.
  • Mounting: screw-on or press-in, plus Blum Inserta and Expando on some Blum hinges.
  • Closing action and finish.

Two-piece hinges also need mounting plates. Our guide to types of cabinet hinges explains each style in more detail.

Questions

How do I know what cabinet hinges to buy?

Check whether the cabinet has a face frame, whether the door is overlay or inset, how much it overlays the opening, and how the old hinge mounts. If you're unsure, take a photo of the old hinge and call us at (800) 882-0009.

What are the different types of cabinet hinges?

The main types are concealed (European) hinges, surface-mount hinges, semi-concealed hinges, partial-wrap and full-wrap hinges, butt hinges and specialty hinges such as pivot and tip-out hinges.

What's the difference between soft-close and self-closing hinges?

A self-closing hinge uses a spring to pull the door shut. A soft-close hinge adds a damper that slows the door at the end so it closes without a bang.

Can I add soft-close to the hinges I have?

You can swap in soft-close hinges, or add a Blumotion damper instead: the Blumotion for doors 970A is made for Euro hinges, and a Blumotion kit for Blum Compact hinges fits Compact face-frame hinges.

Which cabinet hinge brands do you carry?

Blum, Hickory Hardware, Amerock, Youngdale, Pride Industrial, FGV, Hettich and more. Browse our Blum hinges and hardware for the full Blum range.
